Can Human Milk Oligosaccharides support the gut microbiome of infants with cow’s milk protein allergy?
In a recent study with Nestlé Health Science, co-authored by our specialists in Integrative Systems Biology, Helle Krogh Pedersen, PhD, and Josef Korbinian Vogt, PhD, we investigated the effects of an amino acid-based formula supplemented with two Human Milk Oligosaccharides (2’-FL and LNnT) on growth, tolerability, safety, and gut microbiome in infants with Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA).
When comparing the microbiome at baseline to the subsequent visits, we found a significant enrichment in HMO-utilizing bifidobacteria, which was associated with a significant increase in fecal short-chain fatty acids. Conversely, there was a significant reduction in Proteobacteria. These findings suggest that the HMO-supplemented study formula partially corrected the gut microbial dysbiosis in infants with CMPA.
